Alphabet Breaks Pledge: No More AI Weapons Ban

Share

The owner of Google, Alphabet, changed its rules about using artificial intelligence (AI). Before, they promised not to use AI for weapons or spying. Now, they say that these rules have changed.

Demis Hassabis, who leads Google’s AI team, said the rules needed to change for today’s world. He believes AI can help keep a country safe.

In a blog post, Hassabis and James Manyika, a senior vice-president, explained this change. They said that as countries compete for AI technology, it is important for democracies to guide AI development.

They believe that companies and governments, which share similar values, should work together. This teamwork can help create AI that is good for people and supports safety.

Google’s old motto was “don’t be evil,” but this changed in 2009. Many people now worry about how to manage AI technology.

Alphabet’s stocks fell by 8% after the company reported lower earnings. They made $96.5 billion, which was less than expected. Google plans to spend $75 billion to improve its AI and infrastructure.
