The United States has put a 50% import tax on many products from Canada. This tax affects about $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, including food, clothing, and building materials. The new tax started after trade talks between the US and Canada stopped. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the talks broke down because the US made unfair last-minute demands.

The main reason for the new tax is that the US government said Canada was treating US goods, like cars and dairy products, unfairly. The US administration, led by President Trump, said the tax was needed to protect American companies and workers.

Because of this, Canada’s government plans to answer with its own import taxes on American goods. These Canadian taxes will begin on 8 September, as the government tries to defend Canadian businesses.
