Fed Holds Interest Rates as Inflation Persists
Follow spoken words in real time.
The US Federal Reserve, which is the main central bank in the United States, has kept its main interest rate unchanged for the fifth time in a row. The interest rate stays between 3.5% and 3.75%. The decision was made because inflation—when prices go up—has not reached the central bank’s target of 2% yet.
The Federal Reserve kept the rate the same because it believes more time is needed to control rising prices. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh said after the decision that there is no quick way to fix the high cost of living in the country.
Because of the decision, Americans will see borrowing costs for things like loans and credit cards stay the same for now. The Federal Reserve says it will wait for new economic data before changing the interest rate again.
