Singapore Tightens Crypto Rules After Exchange Collapses
Follow spoken words in real time.
On Tuesday, the Monetary Authority of Singapore said it will make new rules for companies that sell cryptocurrencies in Singapore. By March 2026, these companies must keep customers’ money in special trust accounts. This rule comes after two cryptocurrency exchanges closed in 2024, which caused people in Southeast Asia to lose about 230 million dollars.
The main reason for the new rules is to protect people who buy cryptocurrencies. The central bank also said that these companies cannot let customers borrow too much money or lend out small investors’ digital coins. The bank wants to stop problems from bad management.
Because of these new rules, crypto companies must change how they handle customers’ money. The rules will start soon, and the companies will have to follow them to keep operating in Singapore.
