Volkswagen Plans 100,000 Job Cuts in Historic Restructuring
Follow spoken words in real time.
Volkswagen, a well-known car company from Germany, has agreed with worker unions to reduce about 100,000 jobs by 2030. This is one of the biggest job cuts in the car industry. First, Volkswagen planned to cut 50,000 jobs, but now it will remove another 50,000 jobs, making a total of 100,000 fewer jobs by the end of the decade. This is around 15 percent of all people who work for Volkswagen worldwide.
Volkswagen made this decision to save money and keep the company strong in the future. The company says it must change because there are now more electric car companies, especially from China, and it has become harder to sell electric cars in many countries. High costs and changing demand mean Volkswagen needs to change how it runs.
Because of these changes, jobs at four Volkswagen car factories in Germany may not be safe anymore. The factories are in Hannover, Emden, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm. Volkswagen and worker unions say they are looking at other ways to use these factories, but it is possible some might close in the future.
