A Chinese film called Dear You has become very popular in Singapore. The film is special because it is filmed almost completely in Teochew, a Chinese dialect. Many people in Singapore wanted to see the movie in Teochew, but most cinema showings were only in Mandarin. When the first eight Teochew-language screenings sold out in less than two hours, people quickly asked for more showings in the original language.

The main reason for the excitement is that Teochew and other Chinese dialects are slowly disappearing in Singapore. In the past, the government encouraged people to speak Mandarin instead of other dialects, so fewer families use these dialects at home today.

Because of public interest, Singapore’s Ministry of Information allowed 50 more Teochew screenings. Many fans hope this will help keep Chinese dialects alive and allow more people to hear their traditional language.
