Follow spoken words in real time.
A new film called Whalefall was released in cinemas on 16 October. It is a survival thriller directed by Brian Duffield and based on a book by Daniel Kraus. In the story, a teenager named Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, dives off California’s central coast to look for his father’s remains. During the dive, Jay is swallowed by a giant sperm whale and has only one hour of air to survive.
The main reason for the story is Jay’s difficult relationship with his father, Mitt, who was played by Josh Brolin. Mitt taught Jay important lessons about diving but could be strict and sometimes unkind. Inside the whale, Jay must remember his father’s lessons as he tries to survive and thinks about their past together.
The main result is that Jay’s fight inside the whale is not just about escaping. It is also about understanding his feelings for his father and deciding which memories are helpful for him. Whalefall is different from usual monster movies because it mixes survival with a personal story about family.
