Stolen Renoir Paintings Found After Museum Heist
Follow spoken words in real time.
Police in France have found two important paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir after they were stolen from a museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer in southern France. The police arrested six people because of the theft. The paintings were taken from the Renoir Museum, which was once the artist’s home, in September.
Police say the thieves cut a fence, entered through a window, and stole four paintings in less than three minutes. The alarm went off quickly, and the thieves dropped two paintings in the garden as they ran away. They escaped with two paintings called 'Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano' and 'Young Woman at the Well', which belong to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris but were on loan to the Renoir Museum.
Soon after the theft, the police started searching across the country. On 9 October, the missing paintings were found and the six suspects were arrested. It is not clear where the paintings were found or if they were damaged, but the town’s mayor said he felt a great relief after they were returned safely.
