Why ‘Minions & Monsters’ Is Causing a Debate Among Parents
Follow spoken words in real time.
A new film, Minions & Monsters, was released in the United States on 1 July. The movie follows the yellow Minions as they try to become famous in 1920s Hollywood. After their plans fail, two Minions use a pretend magic book to call monsters, but it goes wrong and they must stop the monsters they set free. The film is rated PG and opened at number one at the US box office during the Fourth of July holiday.
The film’s most important scene shows the Minions using the Necronomicon, a made-up spellbook from horror fiction, in an attempt to call a monster named Cthulhu. Some parents were worried because this scene shows witchcraft and supernatural creatures in a funny way.
Because of this scene, some parents became concerned about whether the film is suitable for children, even though it is meant as fantasy and entertainment.
