Can AI Help Save Lives in Intensive Care?
Follow spoken words in real time.
Over 24,000 patients in Australia and New Zealand will join a major study to see if artificial intelligence (AI) can improve treatment for people in intensive care units. The REVOLUTION trial has NZ$5 million in funding and includes 50 hospitals. Many people may recognise how quickly doctors and nurses need to work with complex patient records.
The project will examine if machine-learning systems can help medical staff by giving real-time advice using large sets of patient information. The study aims to show if AI can safely support doctors but not replace them.
If the results are positive, hospitals might begin to use AI more often in emergency medicine. The trial could also help set new, international standards for using AI in difficult healthcare situations.
