FDA approves Merck’s once-daily HIV pill combination
Follow spoken words in real time.
US health officials have approved a new daily pill for HIV called Idvynso. This medicine is a combination of doravirine and islatravir, and is for adults with HIV-1 who are already using other treatments. The new medicine is not for people with a new HIV diagnosis.
The decision to approve Idvynso was based on research with more than 1,000 patients. The studies found that Idvynso worked as well as another popular HIV treatment, Biktarvy. Doravirine is already available in the US in other medicines.
Experts believe Idvynso will not quickly change the HIV medicine market, since it is only for patients who want to switch from their current medicine. However, approval of Idvynso is seen as good progress towards making HIV treatment easier for many people.
