Fifa confronts backlash over World Cup water bottle ban
Follow spoken words in real time.
FIFA has banned reusable water bottles for fans at the 2026 World Cup in North America. This last-minute decision was announced just one week before the tournament starts on 11 June. The new rules stop people from bringing refillable containers, including empty plastic or metal bottles, into any of the 16 stadiums in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
FIFA explained that the ban is for security reasons. They want to avoid injuries caused by bottles being thrown onto the pitch. Similar bans already exist at some stadiums during local sports matches, so FIFA is applying the rule for every World Cup match.
Many health experts and fan groups are worried about the decision. They fear it could make dehydration and heat problems worse, especially at games during hot weather. FIFA says there will be misting stations, cooling tents, hydration points, and regular water prices to help fans stay safe and cool.
