Social Media Giants Settle Kentucky School Mental Health Suit for $27 Million

Four major social media companies have agreed to pay about $27 million to settle a lawsuit from the Breathitt County School District in Kentucky. The school district said that Meta, TikTok, Snap Inc., and YouTube designed their platforms to be addictive for young people. This, they claimed, caused mental health problems among students and hurt their learning.
The lawsuit explained that features like endless scrolling and nonstop notifications made students spend more time online. This led to more anxiety, depression, and other issues for teenagers. The district used extra resources to help students, hiring more mental health staff and starting new support programmes.
The $27 million payment will help the school district pay for these new services and future programmes. Many other school districts in the United States are watching this case. Experts believe this settlement may affect other similar lawsuits against technology companies about the effects of social media on children.
