Sports Could Help Save Lives
Follow spoken words in real time.
A new campaign in the United Kingdom says that sport can help prevent suicide. The campaign is called On Your Side. It was started by the Royal Foundation, a mental health charity called Chasing the Stigma, and the British Standards Institution. On Your Side gives practical advice to people in sports, helping them notice warning signs and talk to someone who might need help.
The campaign began because many people find it hard to talk about mental health problems. The Royal Foundation’s research showed that while people in sports want to help, clubs often do not have enough training or resources. On Your Side wants to give everyone in sports—like players, coaches, and volunteers—the confidence to listen and support someone who may be struggling.
Now, sports clubs across the UK are starting to use the On Your Side toolkit. Important organisations, such as the Football Association and the Premier League, support this idea. The goal is to make suicide prevention part of everyday life in sports, so people feel less alone and know where to find help if they need it.
