A study from the University of Birmingham found that Brain Endurance Training (BET) can improve physical and mental health in older adults. BET combines mental tasks with physical exercise, and is more effective than exercise alone. Participants with BET increased their physical capacity by 30%, showing promise for healthy ageing.
The research included 65 to 78-year-old women, divided into three groups. The BET group did mental tasks before exercise. Another group did only exercise, and the last was a control group. The study lasted eight weeks.
Results showed the BET group had greater physical and cognitive improvements. Their physical performance increased by almost 30%, higher than the exercise-only group. BET participants also improved their mental focus more. Researchers say these findings could help older adults stay independent and safer.
