Can AI Help Unlock the Secrets of the Universe?

CERN, which is the European laboratory that runs the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, is starting a new project with a French company called Mistral AI. They want to build a new artificial intelligence system named Flare. Flare will help scientists study the huge amount of information collected when protons crash together inside the Large Hadron Collider.
CERN chose to use artificial intelligence because the collider creates too much data for people alone to study quickly. Each crash produces billions of pieces of information, and it is difficult for scientists to find important results in all this data. Flare will use technology similar to chatbots, but it will learn from particle data, not human language.
If Flare works well, it will help scientists find new patterns and details in the data. This will make it easier and faster to study experiments, especially after the collider becomes even more powerful in 2030. CERN hopes Flare could also help scientists in other fields in the future.
