Delhi Launches Bold EV Plan to Phase Out Petrol Vehicles by 2030
Follow spoken words in real time.
On 1 July 2026, Delhi, India’s capital, started a new policy to promote electric vehicles. This plan, called the Delhi EV Policy 2026, includes ₹15,000 crore (about US$1.8 billion) from the government. The goal is to reduce the number of petrol and diesel vehicles in the city and help fight Delhi’s serious air pollution problems.
Delhi often has very poor air, and officials say vehicle pollution is a big reason. By encouraging people to switch to electric cars, motorcycles, and three-wheelers, the government hopes to make the air cleaner and improve public health.
With this policy, Delhi now offers tax exemptions and cash bonuses for people who buy electric vehicles or replace old petrol and diesel vehicles. The government will also build 32,000 charging stations by 2030 to support electric transport across the city.
