Everything-to-Grid: How Electric Cars and Smart Devices Could Help Power Future Cities
Follow spoken words in real time.
A new technology called Everything-to-Grid (E2G) may soon let everyday devices like home batteries and electric cars send electricity back to power networks, not just take it. The World Economic Forum, a group that studies important new trends, named E2G one of 2026’s top emerging technologies.
This idea is important because electricity demand is often highest in the evening, when people use more power at home but less electricity comes from solar panels because the sun has set. E2G helps by letting power companies use energy saved in batteries for a short time instead of turning on extra, polluting power stations.
In California, a test with 16,000 homes gave 51 megawatts of electricity to the local grid during busy times. This shows E2G can help the grid by sharing stored energy from many devices when it is most needed.
