First Anti-AI Protester Jailed After Blocking OpenAI Headquarters
Follow spoken words in real time.
A retired teacher named Wynd Kaufmyn, aged 69, has become the first person jailed for protesting against artificial intelligence. She blocked the entrance to OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco in February 2025, during a protest with other activists from a group called StopAI. Kaufmyn chained the doors shut and refused to leave, so she was arrested and found guilty of interfering with a business and trespassing.
Kaufmyn said she protested because she believes companies like OpenAI are building powerful artificial intelligence too quickly. She worries that these new systems may become dangerous if they cannot be properly controlled.
As a result of her actions, Kaufmyn has been sent to jail. The court said her sentence was a clear message that public safety cannot be put at risk during protests.
