NASA Outlines $20 Billion Plan for First Permanent Moon Base at South Pole
Follow spoken words in real time.
NASA has announced a plan to build its first permanent base near the Moon’s south pole. The project will cost $20 billion and will move from short visits to a long-term human presence on the Moon. NASA will work with private companies to help solve technical problems and share costs.
The plan starts in 2029 with robotic missions. These machines will take equipment and explore the area before astronauts arrive. By 2032, NASA hopes people will be able to live and work on the Moon for long periods.
The south pole was chosen because it may have water ice, which is important for water and fuel. If successful, this base will help with future missions to Mars and test new space technology.
