Andy Burnham becomes UK Labour leader and Prime Minister
Follow spoken words in real time.
Andy Burnham has been officially named as the new leader of the United Kingdom’s Labour Party. Burnham, who was the Mayor of Greater Manchester, will become Prime Minister on Monday. He won the job because he received nominations from 379 out of 403 Labour Members of Parliament. Keir Starmer is stepping down after poor poll results and pressure in the party.
Burnham became known as a strong leader in Manchester, and many people call him the "King of the North" for his work to help areas outside of London. He promised to give more political power to regions away from the capital.
When he takes office, Burnham plans to take public control of Thames Water, the UK’s largest water company. This company is in financial trouble, and the government hopes the move will protect water services for 16 million people.
