Deadly Rains Hit China as Thousands Flee Their Homes
Follow spoken words in real time.
Heavy rain in southwest China has killed at least 10 people and forced more than 21,000 people to leave their homes. The rain caused flooding and landslides in areas around Chengdu and Zigong, including in Sichuan province. One serious accident happened during a family gathering in Sichuan, where rain made part of a house fall down.
The main reason for these problems is very strong and continuous rain. The ground became very wet, which made floods and landslides more likely, especially in mountain areas.
Because of these dangers, local officials moved 21,784 people to safe places. Emergency teams are also watching for more rain and possible new floods or landslides. Many families are staying in new shelters while authorities continue to check for risks.
