Floods Force Thousands to Evacuate in Southern China
Follow spoken words in real time.
Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in southern China on Sunday because of serious flooding after days of very heavy rainfall. Rivers overflowed quickly, and streets, houses, and transport networks became covered with water. Emergency teams used boats to help residents leave flooded neighbourhoods in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces.
Local authorities gave emergency weather alerts, and schools were closed in several cities. Train and flight services faced delays because the conditions were dangerous. Temporary shelters were opened for families who had to leave their homes.
Officials warned that more rainfall could increase the risk of landslides, especially in mountain areas. The government sent extra crews, supplies, and medical help to affected communities. Authorities said clean-up work would continue when water levels fall, but more storms are possible soon.
