France Closes 400 Schools as Student Protests Spread
Follow spoken words in real time.
More than 400 schools and colleges in France were closed on Friday because of student protests. The protests started in high schools near Paris and quickly spread to other big cities such as Lyon, Marseille, Strasbourg, Toulouse, and Nantes. Students are unhappy about the poor conditions in schools, including not enough teachers, old buildings, and not enough books or learning resources.
The main reason for these protests is that students want better conditions for learning. They say the government has not done enough to fix teacher shortages and improve school buildings. Many feel that promises from the government are not enough, and they need real changes to their schools now.
Because of the protests, there has been damage to school property and some violence, including fires in school buildings. More than 2,000 people have been arrested, and some students and school workers have been hurt. Student organisations are planning more protests, and the government is now talking with student leaders to find a solution.
