France Faces Crisis After Protests Turn Violent
Follow spoken words in real time.
On 17 October, large demonstrations in France over high living costs and poor public services turned violent. Many people marched peacefully, but in some cities, groups attacked buildings, stole from shops, and fought with police. President Emmanuel Macron spoke on 18 October, criticising the damage and asking why security was not better prepared.
The main reason for the unrest was anger about rising prices and problems with public services like schools and hospitals. Many French citizens are finding it harder to pay for everyday needs and are unhappy with the government's response. This led thousands to join the protests to show their frustration.
As a result of the violence, about 2,400 people were arrested. Around 1,000 police officers were injured, and there was serious damage in cities, including fires and broken shops. President Macron told the Interior Minister to keep order and explain what went wrong. Local leaders now want answers about the security failures during the protests.
