Iran Peace Deadline Expires with No Deal in Sight
Follow spoken words in real time.
A 60-day deadline to end the war between the United States and Iran has passed with no peace agreement. The deadline was set after US President Donald Trump and Iranian officials signed a temporary agreement in June. The plan was to stop fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, an important waterway for world oil and gas.
The main reason for the failed agreement was disagreement over control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran asked for more control and the right to charge ships for using it, but the US refused, saying it must stay open for everyone.
Because no deal was reached, the fighting has slowed but not ended. Oil prices remain high, and energy supplies are still at risk. Other countries, like Pakistan, are still trying to help the US and Iran start new peace talks.
