At least 162 people have died and over 1,000 are missing after a sudden flood hit the border area between Nepal and China’s Tibet on Wednesday. The flood brought water, mud, and rocks through several river valleys, destroying villages and important buildings in Nepal’s Rasuwa district. Rescue teams are working to reach people in remote villages that were cut off by the flood.

The disaster happened because an ice-rock avalanche blocked the Lhende River. This made a temporary dam, which then broke, sending a large amount of water and debris downstream into local villages.

The main result is that many people cannot be found, including nearly 600 foreign tourists from countries such as India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Emergency phone lines have been set up to help families who are looking for missing travellers.
