Thailand School Shooting Death Toll Rises as Bullying Motive Emerges
Follow spoken words in real time.
A tragic shooting happened at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Thailand. On Friday, a 14-year-old student used a gun to kill nine people, including a 12-year-old girl who died later in hospital. The attack also took the lives of school staff, one student, and the suspect’s own grandparents before the boy took his own life at the school.
Police say the main cause of the attack was bullying. The student had been bullied many times by classmates, and a day before the attack, other students locked him in a bathroom. Officers found that the student took his grandfather’s gun from a cabinet at their home.
After the incident, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the school and promised new, stricter gun laws. The school has closed classes for now to help students and families who are traumatised by the shooting.
