Twin Earthquakes Devastate Venezuela as Rescue Efforts Intensify
Follow spoken words in real time.
Venezuela has declared a national state of emergency after two strong earthquakes hit the north-central coast within 39 seconds. At least 32 people have died, more than 700 are injured, and thousands may be trapped under collapsed buildings. Rescue teams are searching through the ruins, and officials believe the number of deaths could rise.
The earthquakes were measured at 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. The first earthquake struck about 160 kilometres west of Caracas, the capital. The second, stronger earthquake quickly followed, causing very strong shaking in Caracas and nearby coastal areas.
Because of the earthquakes, Caracas has suffered serious damage, with several buildings falling down. The airport near Caracas is closed, and power and phone lines are down, making rescue work difficult. Emergency workers are still looking for survivors and helping families who have lost their homes.
