Venezuela Earthquake: Search Teams Race Against Time as More Than 50,000 Remain Missing
Follow spoken words in real time.
Rescue teams are searching for survivors after two strong earthquakes hit northern Venezuela. The earthquakes started on 24 June and killed more than 1,450 people. About 50,000 people are still missing, and the search continues with help from international teams and local volunteers.
The earthquakes were very powerful. First, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake happened, then a 7.5 quake followed just 39 seconds later. This unusual event caused many buildings to collapse because the structures did not have time to recover from the first shock. Many apartments and important buildings are now destroyed or badly damaged.
Because of the earthquakes, many communities have lost electricity and water. Rescue workers from other countries have brought special equipment to find people under the rubble. People are also working together to help friends and family members trapped in collapsed buildings.
