Wildfires in Spain kill 13 amid record European heatwave
Follow spoken words in real time.
Thirteen people have died in wildfires in the southern province of Almería, Spain. The fires started over the weekend in Los Gallardos, an area with many tourists and foreign residents. Five British people are among those who died. The wildfires spread quickly because of very dry weather and strong winds, making it hard for firefighters to control the flames as they reached homes and hotels.
Officials say the main reason for the fires is a record heatwave, with temperatures rising above 45°C in parts of Southern Europe. This is the hottest period in the Iberian Peninsula since records began, according to weather experts.
Because of the fires, the Spanish government has declared the area a disaster zone. This will bring emergency help and money for people who have lost their homes or need support right now.
