Wildfires Sweep Across Europe as Thousands Flee Holiday Destinations
Follow spoken words in real time.
Wildfires are burning across southern Europe. On the Greek island of Paros, fast-moving fires forced the evacuation of nine villages. People, including locals and tourists, went to beaches to get away from the smoke and flames. Emergency workers are trying hard to control the fire.
The main reason for the fires is the very hot weather, dry plants, and strong winds. These conditions make it easy for fires to start and spread quickly. This year, the heat is much stronger than usual in many countries in southern Europe.
Because of the fires, hundreds of thousands of people in Greece, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Turkey have had to leave their homes. Firefighters are still working to stop the fires. Authorities have told people to listen to evacuation orders to stay safe.
