Share

Suchir Balaji was a smart and brave engineer who worked at OpenAI in San Francisco. He helped create ChatGPT but later had concerns about copyright violations. Sadly, he passed away at 26 in what police believe was a suicide.

His parents described him as happy and adventurous. He loved hiking and was known for his attention to detail at work. Colleagues remembered him as a strong contributor to OpenAI.

Balaji grew up in the Bay Area and studied computer science at Berkeley. He joined OpenAI in 2018 and played a key role in projects like WebGPT and ChatGPT. However, he became troubled by the use of online data for AI training, leading him to speak out against copyright issues.

Despite facing challenges, Balaji remained focused on making a difference. His family is planning a memorial in his honor at the India Community Center.
