Hong Kong Turns Halloween into a Month-Long Festival
Follow spoken words in real time.
Hong Kong, a city in southern China, is turning Halloween into a month-long tourism event this year. In the main nightlife area called Lan Kwai Fong, tens of thousands of people came to see costumes of ghosts, zombies, mythological characters, and famous leaders during the first weekend of celebrations. Instead of celebrating only on 31 October, Halloween activities will now continue across three weekends.
This change is happening because tourism leaders and businesses want to attract more visitors and encourage them to stay longer in Hong Kong. They hope that having more parties, costumes, and events will help people spend extra money in local restaurants, hotels, bars, and shops.
As a result, food and drink sales could go up by 20% to 25%, which helps businesses in a difficult market. The new Halloween festival is also giving people a break from daily life to enjoy fun, costumes, and public celebrations in the streets. Hong Kong hopes this longer event will give people a good time and help local companies make more profit.
