Sam Smith and Normani Face Trial Over Hit Song
Follow spoken words in real time.
A copyright lawsuit involving the hit song Dancing With a Stranger by Sam Smith and Normani will move forward in a US court. A federal judge decided that the case should not be dismissed, so a jury may need to decide if Smith and Normani copied another song. The two artists released their song in 2019 and it was very popular around the world.
The legal dispute began because songwriters Jordan Vincent and Christopher Miranda said the main part, or "hook", of Smith and Normani’s song sounds too much like their own song, also called Dancing With a Stranger. Vincent and Miranda released their song in 2015. They say Smith, Normani, and their music companies used protected parts of their music without permission.
Because of the judge’s decision, there could be a full trial where a jury will listen to both songs and decide if there was copying. If the jury agrees with Vincent and Miranda, Smith, Normani, and their music companies may have to pay damages for copyright infringement.
