Anthropic CEO Calls for Slower, Safer AI Development
Follow spoken words in real time.
Dario Amodei, who is the chief executive of the technology company Anthropic, has asked the world to slow down the development of powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems. In an online essay, Amodei wrote that both businesses and governments need extra time to understand and manage the risks of very advanced AI. He suggested that independent experts should check AI for safety, and that there should be basic international rules for AI development. Other tech leaders, such as Sam Altman from OpenAI and Elon Musk from xAI, have agreed with Amodei's call for a slower pace.
Amodei made this request because AI technology is improving very fast and now requires less human supervision to work. Many experts, including people who work inside AI companies, are concerned that stronger AI could behave in surprising and dangerous ways. Amodei warned that there could be problems with cybersecurity or risks to people's safety if companies rush to develop new AI models too quickly.
Because of this, Amodei is asking for AI companies to spend more time testing and checking these powerful systems before making them public. He believes that even a small delay could help improve safety. Anthropic, Amodei's company, plans to follow these safety steps, and he wants governments to make other AI companies do the same.
