Ferry Capsizes in Indonesia, Leaving 129 Missing
Follow spoken words in real time.
A passenger ship called the Virgo Transport 8 sank in the Java Sea during bad weather on Sunday. The ship was travelling from Surabaya, a city in East Java, to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. There were 243 people on board, and by Monday, rescue teams had saved 108 people. Six people were found dead, but 129 people were still missing. Hundreds of Indonesian rescue workers, including the coastguard and navy, are still searching for survivors.
The accident happened because of very bad weather, with strong winds and high waves up to three metres. The rough sea made it hard for the rescue boats to get close to the ship. Underwater rescue teams cannot enter the ship safely until the weather improves. This is delaying the search for missing people.
Because of the accident, many families are waiting for news about their missing relatives. Indonesian officials say the rescue operation will continue as long as possible, and they hope to find more people alive when the sea becomes calm again.
