Scientists have found a new, very large crater on the Moon. The crater is about 222 metres wide, which is bigger than the famous Colosseum in Rome. This crater was made in 2024 when a piece of space rock, called an asteroid or comet, hit the Moon. No one on Earth saw the impact when it happened, because no telescope was watching the right place at the right time.

The main reason this happened is that the Moon is often hit by rocks from space. These hits make new craters on its surface. Scientists only noticed the new crater later, in August 2025, by looking at photographs taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft.

Because of this discovery, scientists now know how powerful a large impact on the Moon can be. The new crater is named McGetchin, after scientist Thomas McGetchin. This information helps space agencies, like NASA, to better understand how often dangerous impacts happen, which is important for future Moon missions.
