Hurricane Simon and Rachel’s Remnants Leave Six Dead in Mexico
Follow spoken words in real time.
On Tuesday, 13 October, officials in Mexico said that flooding and landslides had killed six people along the Pacific coast. Most of the deaths, five people, happened in the city of Ensenada in Baja California. One person died in Guerrero after a wall fell. The bad weather was caused by Hurricane Simon and the last part of Tropical Storm Rachel, which brought very heavy rain to these areas.
The main reason for the disaster was the strong rain from the storm and the old tropical storm. In Baja California, the rain caused a lot of flooding. Water destroyed cars, damaged many homes, and blocked roads. Five people were missing on Tuesday, including three people from Ensenada and two fishermen near San Felipe.
Because of the storms, rescue teams searched for missing people and helped others. Mexican soldiers used helicopters to move people to safety, including 13 children from a camp for orphans. Authorities kept emergency teams working, and many people still faced the risk of more rain and flood in the coming days.
