New Eye Drops Could Make Night Driving Easier
Follow spoken words in real time.
A new type of eye drops may help people who have trouble seeing while driving at night. These eye drops were created by Opus Genetics, a biotechnology company in the United States. In a recent test, 145 people who had problems with night vision after laser eye surgery tried the drops. After 15 days, 21% of the people who used the drops saw much better in low light, compared to just 3% who did not get the real medicine.
People sometimes have problems seeing at night after laser eye surgery like LASIK. Bright lights from cars or streetlights can make it hard to see because of glare or halos. The experimental drops contain a 0.75% solution of a medicine called phentolamine. This medicine makes the pupil smaller, so less light enters the eye. This can help people see more clearly at night.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now looking at the results. The treatment is not approved for night vision problems yet. The FDA will decide if doctors can give this eye drop to people with trouble driving at night, possibly by October 2026.
