North Korea Fires Ten Missiles as Border Tensions Rise
Follow spoken words in real time.
North Korea launched about ten short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast. South Korea’s military said they detected the missiles near Wonsan, a city known for military activities. The missiles travelled about 250 kilometres and then fell into the sea. Japan stated that the missiles did not enter Japan's exclusive economic zone.
This missile launch happened during a time of high tension between North Korea and South Korea. Recently, incidents near the border hurt three South Korean soldiers, and both countries accused each other of dangerous actions. The missile test is seen as another sign of these ongoing problems.
After the missile launch, South Korea increased its military watch and worked closely with the United States and Japan. Officials in Seoul held an emergency meeting and said the launch broke United Nations Security Council rules. South Korea called the action dangerous and raised its military alert level.
