Wall Street Questions Big Tech’s Massive AI Spending
Follow spoken words in real time.
Investors are now being more careful about which technology companies they support for spending a lot of money on artificial intelligence, or AI. Recently, companies like Microsoft, Oracle, Alphabet (the parent company of Google), Amazon, and Meta have spent huge amounts of money on things like computer centres and advanced computer chips to grow their AI businesses. Some companies, like Oracle and Microsoft, received positive feedback after showing clear plans to manage their spending, but Alphabet saw its share price fall by more than 12% when investors worried about high spending and slow growth.
This happened because investors want proof that technology companies can earn enough money from AI to pay for all these new investments. In the past, investors believed AI would quickly bring in more money. Now, they ask companies to show real results and good cash flow—that means earning enough money to keep growing without spending too much or borrowing heavily.
The main result is that technology companies must now show better control over money and spending if they want to keep investor support for their AI projects. If they cannot do this, their share prices may fall and it may be harder to pay for future AI development.
