Australian Home Prices Fall Across 93% of City Suburbs
Follow spoken words in real time.
Home prices in Australia fell in almost every major city suburb in August 2026. New data shows that 93% of city suburbs saw house values drop, with prices across the country going down by 0.9% that month. Sydney and Melbourne, the two largest cities, had some of the biggest drops, with Sydney areas like North Curl Curl losing 19.4% of value.
Prices are dropping mainly because interest rates are high. An interest rate is the extra money you pay when you borrow money from a bank. The Australian government also recently changed tax rules for property owners, making it harder to afford expensive homes.
Because of these changes, many people who own very expensive houses in cities are seeing their homes lose value quickly. At the same time, some people who want to buy their first home are finding more opportunities. Some cheaper suburbs are still stable, but overall, the market is facing one of its largest declines in many years.
