Mercedes-Benz has announced a significant shift in its engine offerings with the introduction of the GLC 53, featuring a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine. This move responds to previous critiques regarding the brand’s reliance on four-cylinder engines in some AMG models, particularly the GLC 43 and 63.
The GLC 53’s engine, designated as “M256M”, has been enhanced to produce 443 lb-ft (600 Newton-meters) of torque, marking an increase of 30 lb-ft (41 Nm) compared to the CLE 53 variant. An overboost function allows for a temporary torque increase to 472 lb-ft (640 Nm) for a duration of 10 seconds. This updated engine incorporates a revised cylinder head, a new intake camshaft, an advanced intercooler, and an enhanced intake system.
In terms of design, the GLC 53 will be available as a “Coupe,” characterised by its sloped roofline, appealing to consumers prioritising aesthetics over practicality. Both the traditional and Coupe variants can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.1 seconds, reaching a top speed of 167 mph (270 km/h) when equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package. Additionally, a new exhaust system aims to provide a more robust auditory experience, featuring “special resonators.”
An advanced nine-speed torque-converter automatic transmission delivers power to all four wheels and can be complemented by an optional electronically limited-slip differential. Notably, this model introduces drift mode, a feature that enhances driving performance for enthusiasts, albeit at an additional cost.
Mercedes has not yet disclosed pricing, but the GLC 53 is expected to be positioned between the GLC 43, priced at $68,900, and the GLC 63, which starts at $88,100.
