In late 2025, workers in Chongqing, China, found the bones of a giant dinosaur. This dinosaur is called Tongnanlong zhimingi. It is a new species that scientists had not seen before.
The dinosaur is about 28 meters long. This makes it one of the biggest land animals known. The discovery is important because it can tell us more about dinosaurs and how they lived.
A research team led by Xuefang Wei wrote a report about the dinosaur in November 2025. They found the bones in a formation that is about 147 million years old. This area also has fossils of different animals like turtles and clams, showing that it was a wet environment.
Scientists believe that this area could support many large herbivores, which are plant-eating animals. The position of Tongnanlong‘s remains shows it died near where it was found.
The discovery challenges an old theory. This theory said that dinosaurs in East Asia evolved in isolation. The finding suggests that dinosaurs moved more widely than previously thought.
