Last week, the Paris 2024 Olympics began, but fans of the Mario & Sonic franchise might be disappointed as it seems the series has come to an end.
Lee Cocker, who was involved with all the games in the franchise, announced on social media that the series concluded in 2020 with the Tokyo games. He shared a picture from 2009 where he demonstrated the Olympic Winter Games release to the Olympic committee president.
“For the people that are asking, there will be no Mario & Sonic at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The franchise ended with Mario and Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. I know because I worked on all the games in the franchise.”
Lee Cocker, who managed the Mario & Sonic Olympic franchise for 14 years, mentioned Sega and Nintendo as some of the high-profile companies he worked with over the years.
He also indicated that fans might not see a character-based title like Mario and Sonic in the future. Currently, the only developer with Olympic licensing is nWay, who recently developed the free-to-play Olympics GO! game on mobile. Interestingly, the Paris 2024 Olympics mark the first Summer Olympics in 30 years without a console video game.
