Google Unveils AI-Driven Scam Protection in Chrome

Share

Google has announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence into Chrome, aiming to enhance your browsing experience by detecting scams on various web pages.

As discovered by Leo on X, a new flag in Chrome Canary allows the feature to utilize a Large Language Model (LLM) to analyze content directly on your device.

This innovative functionality aids users in identifying the brand and intent behind a web page, thereby facilitating the recognition of potential scams. It is compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems.

While the precise mechanism of the feature remains unclear, it may provide warnings when users stumble upon dubious websites. For instance, if you encounter a fraudulent Microsoft tech support page that alarmingly suggests your computer is compromised, Chrome’s AI might analyze the text for manipulative tactics such as false urgency or suspicious URLs, subsequently alerting you to steer clear of the site and protect your personal information.

This tool is currently under evaluation in Chrome Canary and might correlate with Chrome’s Enhanced Protection feature, which has also been recently upgraded to incorporate AI.

Chrome’s Enhanced Protection is now AI-Enhanced.

According to Google, the revamped Enhanced Protection feature delivers real-time safeguards against perilous sites, downloads, and extensions. Before October, this feature operated without AI, merely providing proactive protection, but it has now evolved into a more sophisticated AI-powered system.

Google is presumably leveraging pre-trained data to comprehend and warn users about scams or hazardous websites. Ongoing testing of these AI-driven security features continues, yet the timeline for further updates remains uncertain.
