Can TikTok Keep Americans' Data Safe? Congress Wants Answers
Follow spoken words in real time.
Will Farrell, the Chief Security Officer of TikTok’s U.S. business, will speak to the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party in Washington, D.C. on 15 September. He will answer questions about TikTok’s ability to keep American user data safe from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
This hearing is happening because the U.S. government wants to make sure American users’ data is protected. In response to new U.S. laws, TikTok created a new American company structure earlier this year. This new arrangement limits ByteDance’s control and includes American partners such as Oracle.
As a result, Congress will now check if this new structure is strong enough to keep user data in the United States. Lawmakers want to know if TikTok’s changes can really protect American users’ personal information from outside access.
