UN Warns Middle East Conflict is Driving Historic Levels of Global Hunger
Follow spoken words in real time.
The United Nations World Food Programme says that conflict in the Middle East has caused 363 million people around the world to face serious hunger. The UN agency reports that about 45 million people are at immediate risk of famine. The fighting, especially involving Iran, has disrupted trade and farming, which has made the problem worse.
The crisis is also related to high oil prices, expensive food transport, and not enough fertiliser. These issues have made food costs rise, and many people in poorer countries cannot afford basic food items now.
The UN says that a big reduction in international aid has forced them to cut food rations in poor areas. They warn that the situation could worsen unless more help and financing become available soon.
