Scientists Turn DNA Into Ultra-Low-Power Computer Memory
Follow spoken words in real time.
Scientists at Penn State University in the United States have created a new type of memory device using DNA and a material called perovskite. DNA is the molecule that stores information in every living thing. In this experiment, the team made a very small memory device that can hold information and uses very little electricity.
The scientists chose DNA because it can store huge amounts of data in a very small space. They improved its ability to carry electricity by adding tiny silver particles and then combined it with perovskite, which is used in solar panels.
Because of this work, the device could store and remember data while using about one-tenth of the power of other similar technologies. The new memory device lasted over six weeks at room temperature and stayed stable up to 121°C.
